Trimming is generally reactive (trimming a branch which is storm-damaged or has grown over the house). Pruning is the pro-active act of cutting certain branches to guide the growth of a tree. Generally, a tree is pruned to foster healthy branches by removing competition, promote a certain shape or to maintain a certain height or thickness of the canopy.
